Overview

Bernie’s Jerk Kitchen, nestled at 124 Richards St in Joliet, Illinois, offers a vibrant and authentic soul food experience that is quickly becoming a local favorite. This takeout-only spot brings the bold, smoky flavors of Caribbean jerk cuisine together with classic Southern comfort dishes, creating a unique culinary fusion that draws in food lovers craving genuine, hearty meals.

The heart of Bernie’s menu lies in its expertly crafted jerk dishes—jerk lamb chops, jerk rib tips, and jerk fried catfish stand out as crowd-pleasers. Customers rave about the perfectly seasoned meats that balance fiery heat with deep, savory undertones. These are not just meals but celebrations of tradition and spice, cooked with care and passion that’s evident in every bite.

Complementing the main dishes are Sunday specials that showcase classic soul food staples: creamy baked mac & cheese, tender yams and sweet potatoes, collard greens with turkey, and savory rice and gravy. The sides enhance the main courses, offering the right textures and flavors to round out a fulfilling meal. While the kitchen does a fantastic job, some patrons have noted a wish for cornbread availability beyond Sundays, which could elevate the experience even further.

Guests receive buzzers for quick pickup, making the process efficient without sacrificing friendliness—a crucial balance for a spot that caters to busy individuals and families looking for a comforting, home-style meal on the go.

Many reviewers express relief and joy at finding an alternative to having to travel to Chicago. Bernie’s appeals to a diverse audience—from longtime Southern cooking enthusiasts to those exploring Caribbean flavors for the first time—making it a gathering point for anyone eager to enjoy well-crafted, bold food in a community-focused setting.

Overall, Bernie’s Jerk Kitchen offers a dependable, delicious escape into soulful flavors, defined by quality ingredients and cultural authenticity. I've been looking for a good soul food place in Joliet. I get so tired of driving to Chicago to find good tasting food. I've tried other soul food places In Joliet but this one by far has been the best!!! I've been about 5 times since I recently found out about it just randomly on Google. And each and every time I have never been disappointed!!! The first meal I tried was the jerk lamb chops with the mac and cheese and yams. soooooo good!!!! I loved every bite. Although I do wish they offered cornbread with the dinners and not just on Sundays my experience at Bernie's has been exactly what Ive been looking for. I also tried the catfish dinner. Very delicious! The greens!! so good. Overall 10/10 satisfactory!!!

The staff are very friendly. This is take out only so they give you a buzzer so you’ll know when your food is ready. The jerk lamb chops are superb. The oxtails, yams and garlic mashed potato are equally amazing.

Food is worth checking out. I had the jerk tip, catfish, lasagna, mac n cheese, mash potatoes, and yams. Really good! it is difficult to find places that still cooks amazing food. already planning my next visit. Only thing that could have been better is having a side of sauce for the tips.

Food is off the mfn chain do you hear me. I've been twice in a row and im going back today lol I had the chicken, rib tips, Mac, greens, dressing, sweet potatoes ALLLL of that was delicious. I will say I would've gave them a full 5 if the service was better. I was told 15 mins and came and still had to wait like 25 mins after the initial 15 on my 1st time coming there but the 2nd time the wait was better because I came in 30 mins instead of the 15 they said. Also the younger girl at the windows had a very very bad attitude not really sure why maybe she was having a bad 2 days not sure but the older Hispanic woman that was there my 1st day who originally took my order was so kind and helpful with ordering since it was my 1st time coming there. Overall food was beyond great and I mean beyond and the other people working there were super friendly besides the younger girl. Will be back today lol then im going to take a break need to keep my shape right Edit: Name i guess theyre not open today so my mid waist is safe today
